RICK HERRICK - Dark Brother of the church of burgertime

November 2001

PONTIFEX MAXIMUS issues a call to the Vicars and church FATHERS: From the FRIEND who is COMSTOCK of the COLUMBIA COLLEGE IN CHICAGO, this question has been asked of us:

QUERY: What was it about Burgertime that makes it stand out as compared to other games?

RESPONSE: For me, Burgertime represents subordinating our desires and our animal impulses to the needs of others and, through the meditative silence thus achieved, reaching a state of peace and oneness with all. Let me give you an example.

If you were being chased by a pissed off pickle, your primal instinct would be to run like hell. But Peter Pepper teaches us that this is not always the best solution! Instead you can wait, let the pickle catch up to you, and by so doing lead that pickle onto the waiting bun and DROP that pickle down to the waiting burger receptacle. If you'd followed your most primal instincts, you would have had a dropped bun and would still be chased by that pickle. This is some of what Peter Pepper teaches us.

But there's more.

The most basic level of Burgertime is, of course, building the burger and avoiding the hellish hot dogs. But there's more. As time goes by, our "adversaries" multiply: fried eggs, pickles, even more hot dogs. But it seems like our resources remain the same. Only one little Peter Pepper to play with. Oh, sure, you can earn more pepper shakes as time goes on, but that's no big deal, right?

But through Burgertime we learn of the interconnectedness of *everything*. Those pickles, fried eggs, and hot dogs want to eat us, which makes them evil. Except that, outside of Burgertime, WE want to eat the pickles, fried eggs, and hot dogs! I have a pickle in my bagged lunch today! Burgertime reverses the natural order of things and by so doing makes us more closely examine our place in the universe. We realize our interconnectedness in other ways too. Drop some hot dogs, eggs, or pickles on a burger and you not only score big points, but you can make fries and shakes appear! And eating these fries and shakes gives us more pepper shakes. These pepper shakes save us from the rampaging food items that then can be dropped for... more shakes and fries!

Glory be to Peter Pepper, who makes us realize the truth, our place in the universe, and the interconnectedness of all life and fast food items.

Signed,

Dark Brother Rick, aka Echo Wonder Tube
